The Russo-Ukrainian War

Ukraine, a country located on EU eastern border, is now at the epicenter of events. Until recently, its civilians lived their normal lives, but today they are defending their families and land in a war that the Russian Federation cynically calls a liberation operation.

The conflict in Ukraine, which began back in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea and the seizure of Donetsk and Luhansk regions' parts, eight years later grew into a large-scale confrontation. Now few remember how it all began.

In November 2013, thousands of people went to the main square of Kyiv to support the European path of Ukraine, and this is how the Euromaidan began. The execution of peaceful protesters, immortalized in history as the Heavenly Hundred, the escape of the pro-Russian President Yanukovych, the formation of a new democratic system, marked the beginning of a promising stage in the life of the country.

However, not all residents of Ukraine supported the pro-European course. Pro-Russian separatists, sponsored and supported by powerful Russian propaganda and Russian military formations, organized the so-called Referendum on the state independence of the newly formed Republics.

Illegitimate referendums in the Donetsk, Luhansk regions and Crimea were not recognized by either the official authorities of Ukraine or the rest of the world. Since the summer of 2014, there have been fierce battles for the restoration of peace and the borders of sovereign independent Ukraine.

Official Kyiv recognized the authorities of the Donetsk People's Republic and Luhansk People's Republic (DPR and LPR) as terrorist organizations. The leadership of the so-called Republics has established close cooperation with the Kremlin, Russian passports have been introduced, the ruble was introduced as official currency.

In 2015, the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France signed the Minsk Agreement, which comprise a number of measures to resolve the conflict, including a regime of silence, the withdrawal of heavy weapons and the subsequent implementation of the Steinmeier formula. All attempts by official Kyiv to resolve the conflict peacefully over the course of eight long years were unsuccessful. At the end of 2021, the Russian Federation began to build up its military forces on the borders of Ukraine, which caused concern not only among the Ukrainian authorities, but also among Western partners (the European Union and the United States).

The situation escalated after Russia recognized the so-called DPR and LPR as independent states on February 21, 2022 and the official Russian troops intervention.

On the morning of February 24, Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the initiation of a “special military operation”, which required the complete occupation of the territories of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, as well as the so-called “cleansing” of the entire territory of Ukraine.

The war in Ukraine caused a real shock among civilians. The morning of February 24 began with a large-scale bombing of the capital Kyiv and major Ukrainian cities. The events of that day for many Ukrainians seemed absurd and surrealistic. How can neighbors who so easily toss around the concepts of "liberation" and "brotherly people" attack with such Nazi brutality, slaughtering every living thing in their path?

Thousands of Ukrainians were buried alive under the ruins of residential areas, schools and hospitals, fleeing from Russian "peacekeepers". Evacuation green corridors are mercilessly shelled. The cities of Mariupol, Kharkiv, Bucha, Irpin, Gostomel and many others have been literally razed to the ground. Many of them are now undergoing a humanitarian catastrophe. In cold weather, without proper living conditions, residents sit in cold cellars under incessant shelling by heavy artillery and air strikes.

Children, the elderly and women are dying from dehydration and lack of medicine. It is terrible to imagine what people who saw the horrors of the Second World War are experiencing now, being on the verge of the Third World War.

Russia, hiding behind the "Russian world" and humanity, today once again showed hypocrisy, bringing chaos and destruction to the grace-filled Ukraine.

The Ukrainian authorities are now doing everything in their power to restore peace and justice in their native land.
